Good afternoon everyone. After a stellar Opening Day, Carl Crawford will get a night off against Madison Bumgarner, a left-hander. Jerry Hairston, Jr. will get the start in his place. This is per Dylan Hernandez (Twitter: @DylanOHernandez) of the Los Angeles Times.
Crawford will be available as a pinch hitter or late-inning replacement if necessary.
Dodger fans will remember that Hairston was a capable fill-in at many different positions last season, hitting well early in the season and making many spectacular plays at 2nd base, 3rd base, and in the outfield before suffering a season-ending injury. Hopefully Hairston will pick up where he left off before he got hurt last season and provide the Dodgers with stellar defense and timely hits in tonight’s game.
Crawford was replaced in Left Field in the late innings during yesterday’s 4-0 Opening Day win over the Giants by Skip Schumaker, and it appears that Manager Don Mattingly will make efforts at least early in the season to limit Crawford’s playing time as he did not have a full Spring Training while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Crawford was 2 for 4 on Opening Day with a rocket single leading off the first inning and a big double in the 8th inning. Crawford was caught stealing third in the first inning and scored a run on a passed ball in the 8th.
